Hiking Status

Simon and I completed this hike on Sept. 06, 2008.

  • The Morraine trail was washed out, and we did not get to Emmons Glacier.
  • The stream that used to flow next to the trail washed out a large portion of the trail, and must now be crossed several times.
  • We hiked to Glacier Basin, then on a ways after the officially maintained trail ended.
  • We each put notes about the hike in the Rangers' log book at White River Camp Ground.

Emmons Glacier Trip

Emmons Glacier is an interesting and wonderful place to visit. The White River eminates from an ice cave at its base, branching and coming back together several times. There are also several lakes of glacial origin which have spectacular hues due to the high concentration of glacial silt.

This hike is very low impact. Then again, I wouldn't lie to you to get you out there would I?

The Particulars

  • You can park at the White River Campground parking lot.
    • If you want to camp you may want to arrive on Friday. One lot costs $12.
  • $15 park entrance fee.

Route

  1. We'll start out at the White River Campground
  2. Head to Emmons Glacier
  3. Continue on towards Glacier Basin

At this point we can head back or:

  2. Go to the Fremont Fire lookout (awesome view)
  3. Hike to Sunrise (having cached a car to go back to White River)
